Postcard From Sacramento: Dean Gary Segura Forms Public Policy Bridge From UCLA

If Gary Segura, dean of the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, wasn’t well known in Sacramento before he took his post during the last year, his early 2017 calendar serves as a means to end that.

The new dean has been visiting with elected and government officials to emphasize the value research from the Luskin School can bring to policymaking decisions, including his own inquiries into government’s impact on Latino communities.

“My principle message is that the University of California is a resource unlike any other for the state,” he said. “It is a key to driving innovation, economic growth and a reason this state leads in so many categories. It should be protected, nurtured and fostered.”

Postcard From Sacramento: Professor Edward Leamer Forecasts The Economy

Professor Edward Leamer presents the UCLA Anderson Forecast, which came out most recently on June 13.

Elected officials up in Sacramento know that Director of the UCLA Anderson Forecast (released new June 13) Edward Leamer’s door is always open for a lively discussion.

“I think good citizenship is essential to a good university’s function,” Leamer said. “The faculty needs to do what it can to help the governance of the locales in which they reside — the city, the county and the state. I go up to Sacramento with that in mind. It’s an opportunity and an important function that’s really part of my job and also part of my activity of being a citizen of California.”

AUDIO: Spreading the word about a new UCLA community School in South LA

The Mann UCLA Community School brings together the resources of the school, family and community to help young people thrive and make families and communities stronger in the South Los Angeles area. The school will prepare all students to graduate from high school ready to succeed in college, careers, and civic life. The school is currently enrolling students for 6th through 9th grade for the 2017-2018 school year.

Federal relations event advises campus community on how to advocate for UCLA

A little guidance and planning can go a long way toward being an effective advocate for UCLA in light of what’s happening in Washington, D.C., those attending a special briefing by UCLA Government and Community Relations learned recently.

The briefing was held because the campus community has shown increased interest in responding to the proposed budget by the Trump administration. Nearly 100 UCLA students, faculty and alumni attended the May 30 event, including Dean Jayathi Murthy of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science and Laura Gómez, the interim dean of the Division of Social Sciences in the UCLA College.

More than 100 community members and UCLA alumni gathered on Tuesday at Ca’ Del Sole in Toluca Lake for a special reception honoring a True Bruin in his own right, Los Angeles Fourth District City Councilmember David Ryu ‘99.

Bliss Youth Orchestra serenaded the crowd as they mingled and networked while various unique Italian hors d’oeuvres were served.

UCLA Volunteers Make Mother’s Day Special For Foster Families

A group of UCLA students and alumni dedicated their Mother’s Day this year to honoring local area foster families.

Approximately 55 UCLA volunteers helped with the 9th Annual Foster Mother’s Day at Willows Community School in Culver City, an event that this year gave a special day to more than 3,000 foster parents and children.
